Barbara M. Golub

Barbara Morris Golub passed away peacefully in the early hours of March 28th 2021 at Masonicare in Wallingford CT. She was born in Bridgeport, CT September 14th, 1930 to the late Ellwood H. and Catherine Holmes Morris. Barbara was predeceased by her brother, George E. Morris and her ex-husband Stanley Golubowicz. She is survived by daughter, Carol Legman and her husband Michael; grandson, William Damsky, his wife Jody and daughters August and Robin; grandson, Ben, his wife Laurie and sons Nathaniel and Fenwick; niece, Ann Cote (Jim Tolster); nephews, Tim Morris (Marie) and Chris Morris (Dolleen); sister-in-law, Barbara Morris and prior son-in-law, Bill Damsky, Sr (Amy); as well as many cousins.

Born and raised in Bridgeport, Barbara attended Zion Lutheran Church and school. She graduated from Central High School. Barbara achieved the highest score on the Civil Service Exam. She worked as a bookkeeper for many years at Dinan Memorial Center in Bridgeport, retiring November 10th 1988, which was designated “Barbara Golub Day” by the Mayor of Bridgeport. Having always loved the town of Milford, she purchased a condominium there, and upon retiring, worked as a receptionist for Beazley Realtors and volunteered on the board of the Milford Mental Health Center. A person of faith, she joined the Zion Lutheran Church in Orange.

Barbara loved living in her condominium in Milford (the town she had long desired to live in), strategically located near the main entrance of the complex, where she regularly greeted her neighbors, gave treats to the dogs being walked, and astutely surveyed the comings and goings …some of us joked that she might be becoming a “Condo-Cop.”  Sitting outside or at the local diner with her daughter Carol, she fondly reminisced the old days in Bridgeport, childhood antics with her cousin June, family gatherings at Seaside Park and Pine Rock Park, holiday parties, visits to Cape Cod and Maine, and volunteering as a Candy Striper along with her lifelong friend Georgette at St. Vincent’s Hospital, where they were known as Lucy and Ethel.

Barbara’s love of sports, particularly baseball (Go, Mets!), and college basketball (Go UConn! …men & women) is known to all who knew her. She was an avid fan, and never missed a game. She was acutely aware of the strengths and weaknesses of each player …just as she was of the people around her. She was a living, breathing BS-meter. Nothing got by her.

A 5-foot dynamo, Barbara was known for her generous smile, her wry sense of humor, her dignity and tell-it-like it-is attitude, and the twinkle in her eyes that revealed her true self. Behind her no-nonsense, organized, competent, independent demeanor was the loving, supportive, non-judgmental mother and grandmother that lives on within her daughter Carol, and her grandsons Bill and Ben, the lights of her life. Upon her retirement, she would regularly babysit them, taking them to the movies, the mall, their ball games, and elsewhere. Her face lit up whenever mentioning them, her greatest joy was watching them grow, prosper, and have beautiful families of their own. Her fingerprints will forever be on those she touched, loved, and formed. The trickle-down goodness of Barbara Golub has continued to make a difference, seen in her daughter Carol’s years of dedication and support as her advocate and companion as well as Carol’s educating and helping persons with disabilities, her grandson Bill’s tireless medical research, practice, and teaching, and her attorney grandson Ben’s volunteer accounting and philanthropy.

Barbara faced life’s challenges and her illness with courage, strength, dignity, and grace. She could always find a reason to smile.

The family would like to thank the staff of Ramage 3 (Nicole, Sara, Tracey, Zuleyka, Brenda, Stephan, Rachael) and Masonic Hospice (Michelle, Amy) and many others who braved this last year to care of her. A special thank you to Denise from Masonic Hospice for her pastoral guidance, friendship and video chats.

A big hug and goodbye from Barbara in her behalf to all of her friends, family and caregivers who enriched her life.

We are all so grateful that she was able to reconnect in person with her family after a year of being apart. She was able to spend time in person with her devoted daughter and beloved grandsons and find completeness in the final chapter of her life. Barbara will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Mom, Grandma G, GG, we adore you and you will be in our hearts forever.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at a walk-through wake on Thursday, April 1, 2021 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad St., Milford, CT. Masks and social distancing will be required. A private family funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. However, all are invited to attend virtually via livestream at www.oneroomstreaming.com.
